Deck Maintenance Checklist for the New Year

Technically, a deck is a raised platform at the back of the house. It can have more than one level and might be accessed by steps or a flight of stairs, unlike a patio. They’re often made of wood or some wood composite, so they might need a bit more care than a patio made of stone, tile or concrete. The beginning of the new year is a good time for a maintenance checklist. Here are some items to consider.

Take a Look at Your Deck

When the weather is mild enough, go out to your deck and give it an inspection. Notice the condition of the floorboards, the joists, the railing, the steps and any fasteners. Notice any damage done by the weather, fungi or insects, especially if you have an older deck that wasn’t treated with insect repellent. Don’t repair problems yourself. You must call a decking contractor because they have the training and tools to get the job done properly. Also, don’t put off these repairs. Small problems can turn into large, expensive ones in a surprisingly short time.

Have a Pro Repair the Deck

You might notice that some of the boards of your deck have been damaged. Have a professional take them up and replace them. If a lot of boards are in bad shape, you might have to replace the deck. When the boards have been replaced or if they’re sound, a professional will tighten any loose screws or fasteners. If they’re badly rusted, they will replace them. One way that a contractor will see if the fasteners are in good shape is that they will hit them with a hammer. A loose bolt sounds hollow, while a secure one sounds solid.

Clean the Deck

The best time to clean your deck is on a dry and mild day. A professional will hook up your garden hose and fit it with a spray nozzle, or they will have their own water and machinery for the job. They will come prepared with a wood cleaner, a bucket, a scrub brush, gloves and safety goggles. The type of brush they will select depends on the material of the deck. Real wood, for example, should be cleaned with a soft-bristle brush.

They will also cover any nearby plants, remove any deck furniture, and give the deck a sweeping. Then, they add the cleaner, brush it in, then rinse. They might then treat your deck and sand it. If your deck is made of wood, a pro will seal it after it’s been sanded.

Your deck is one of the outdoor places on your property where you can relax and entertain. If your deck or patio needs service, don’t hesitate to call our professionals at MC Home Improvements & Construction of Northern New Jersey.
